A PFAS Free Olympics

The Utah 2034 Olympic Winter Games should be the first ever PFAS-free games.

What are PFAS?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals used to make materials resistant to water, stains, grease, and heat. Because they do not break down easily, they accumulate in ecosystems and the human body.

The Problem

PFAS have been linked to serious health risks, including immune system damage, hormone disruption, developmental effects in children, and increased risk of certain cancers. The EPA set the legal limit for some PFAS in drinking water at just 4 parts per trillion—roughly four drops of water in an Olympic-size swimming pool!

The Current Status

The work has started, but there is a lot more to be done.

Prior to the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympic Games, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation banned PFAS-based ski wax, recognizing environmental and health concerns.

This demonstrates that some Olympic governing bodies have started the process to eliminate PFAS.

Venue Interiors

PFAS are often found in stain-resistant fabrics, which are commonly used in venue interiors, carpets, furniture, curtains, and flooring materials.

When remodeling or building facilities for the Olympics, it is possible to adopt PFAS-free alternatives.

The PFAS-Free 2034 Initiative

Position Utah 2034 as the first Winter Olympic Games to fully eliminate PFAS by partnering with manufacturers of PFAS-free alternatives and using PFAS-free materials where ever possible.
