The Waste Opportunity

A new and improved glass recycling system is taking shape across Utah, with safe, accessible drop-off points added through partnership with municipalities and local businesses, and coordination with regional processors. This growing network reduces waste, cuts emissions from transportation used for recycling purposes, and supports greener jobs. This initiative helps lay the groundwork for a more circular, resilient local economy.

Background

How's Utah's Current Recycling Doing?

Unfortunately, Utah is seriously falling behind. According to the latest data, Utah ranks 32nd in the nation for recycling rates, down one spot from last year. Even more concerning is that Utah was recently ranked the second least eco-friendly state in the entire country. These statistics highlight a serious need for improvement in our state's recycling infrastructure and environmental efforts.

How it Started

Read the original proposal that was created by the Midvale City Youth Council and passed by a mock committee at the Local Officials Day on the Hill 2025.

The Plan

Expand Collection Access

Add more drop-off points at schools, grocery stores, and parks - and expand the types of materials accepted, like glass bottles and batteries.

Increase Processing Capacity

Encourage the expansion and modernization of recycling facilities by offering business incentives. These upgrades help turn waste into valuable materials, reduces landfill use, and creates local jobs in collection, processing, manufacturing.

Raise Public Awareness

Launch a statewide campaign to instill lifelong sustainable habits in the next generation through hands-on education in schools.
