The "Waste" Opportunity

An expansive glass recycling system is taking shape across Utah, with safe, accessible drop-off points introduced at strategical locations through partnership with municipalities and local businesses, and in coordination with regional processors. This growing network cuts emissions from transportation of recyclables, reduces landfill usage, and supports greener jobs. This initiative helps lay the groundwork for a more circular, resilient local economy.

The
Motivation

Utah's Abysmal State of Recycling

According to the latest data, Utah ranks 32nd in the nation for recycling rates, down one spot from last year. Even more concerning is that Utah was recently ranked the second least eco-friendly state in the entire country. These statistics highlight a serious need for improvement in our state's recycling infrastructure and environmental efforts.

The Precursor

Read the original policy proposal that inspired this project. It was created by the Midvale City Youth Council and passed by mock committees at the Local Officials Day on the Hill 2025.

The Plan

Expand Collection Access

Quadtriple the volume of recycled glass by introducing more drop-off points near high foot-traffic locations such grocery stores, parks, and schools.

Increase Processing Capacity

Offer financial incentives in additionol to the reduced source ematerial cost to encourage the expansion and modernization of recycling facilities and introduction of new downcycling operations.

Raise Public Awareness

Launch a statewide educational campaign to instill lifelong sustainable habits in the next generation through hands-on education in schools.
